• Tuberculosis (TB)
• Pneumonia (parapneumonic effusion)
• Malignancy
• Liver cirrhosis

Diagnosis
• Chest X-ray
• Ultrasound chest
• CT chest
• Pleural fluid analysis (thoracentesis)
Treatment
• Treat the underlying cause
• Therapeutic thoracentesis/drainage when indicated
